ADAS-Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Since I have seen the video from the Mobileye company, I was attracted by this new name -- car assistance system. So I'd like to create a new catalog about this technique. Definitely the most of the introduction and information about it is from internet, specially from wikipedia. But don't worry, most of the contents you can't find there in English. Since I have found that about this technique in Wiki, the German introduction and information is more detailed than English. So with the translation and some contents from a few scientific papers, I hope you guys could enjoy more from this nice technique. So here we go!

The ADAS uses some modern electrical technique as a support to increase the driving safety meanwhile making the driving more enjoyable. Roughly to say, the functions of ADAS are divided into automatic or quasi-automatic in motor and mechanic controlling, sending the relevant signals to the car and offering a warning to the driver with the help of Human-Machine
Interaction technique before or during a dangerous situation. So from the attractive functions of the ADAS we can feel how necessary is this application to the automobile.

As a electrical Engineer of course my focus is the last capacity, but not those mechanic principles as how ESP or ABS works. And to apply it as a warning function, the ability to communicate with the environment is quite significant. At the moment there are four most popular environment sensor available:
1. ultrasonics -- usually applied for parking
2. radar -- lane change assistance, automatic distance warning
3. Lidar -- monitoring the blind angle monitoring, automatic distance warning, distance controlling, Pre-Crash and Pre-Brake
4. Camera -- Lane Departure warning, traffic signs detection, lane change assistance and blind angle monitoring
Sometimes two or three of the ways above will be combined as a whole to realize some specific functions. Those sensors are usually able to cooperate with the other assistance system. e.g with the data from GPS the ADAS could offer the proper warning dependent on the location like speed limitation of the actual area.

More and more new functions are added into this amazing system every year, and some are still on the way for a future's application like object detection, pedestrians protection, accident detection, automatic emergency brake, infrared night vision and so on. According to a survey about the driving safety, the ADAS system is regarded as the most beneficial tool to improve the safety, so it is truly in demand in the market.

There are absolutely some drawbacks of this system like the habituation to the system of the user, but who will doubt the ability of ADAS to help the drivers control the cars correctly and safely. Certainly for that numberless of engineers must make great efforts!
